Speaking to SABC News at the 26th International AIDS Conference in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil HIV Vaccines Product Development Team Lead at IAVI, Dr Vincent Muturi-Kioi, says the decades-long response to HIV has provided valuable lessons that can be applied to managing Ebola and other emerging infectious diseases. Meanwhile a new research study examining the scale of disruptions to HIV programmes following the Trump administration's funding cuts to the U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief or PEPFAR, has shown a devasting blow to the global response to HIV. The 26th International AIDS Conference is expected to present an opportunity for global dialogues on funding prospects in the global response to HIV. While the contentious issue of funding cuts is set to dominate talks at the conference, scaling-up predictable domestic funding for HIV programmes could see countries move closer to achieving the global goal of ending AIDS as a public health threat by 2030.
