The ZiG was introduced in April last year to replace bond notes, which had become worthless due to inflation. Pilots at South African Airways (SAA) are on a 'work-to-rule' protest action- a form of industrial action where employees strictly stick to official working rules and hours in a bid to decrease efficiency and reduce output. The action follows a wage negotiation deadlock between the airline and the two unions representing the pilots. The SAA Pilots Association and National Transport Movement (NTM) Pilot Forum, initially demanded a 30% salary increase, which was later reduced to 15.7%, while SAA is offering a 3-year salary increase agreement, which is a 7.3% increase in 2025, and a 7.6% increase in 2026 and 2027. Mali will partially lift its suspension on mining permits, which has been in place since 2022, starting March 15. The military-led West African nation, a major gold producer, initially halted the issuance of mining titles in November 2022 to streamline the process. Last year, Mali enacted a new mining code that increases taxes and expands state ownership in mining projects. Following efforts to clean up the mining register, authorities will now accept applications for permit renewals, transitions from exploration to exploitation, and transfers of exploitation permits. Nigeria's economic crimes commission says it recovered nearly $500 million in proceeds of crime last year and secured more than 4000 criminal convictions, its highest since the agency's inception more than two decades ago. The country has struggled for decades with endemic corruption, which many Nigerians say contributes to widespread poverty in the country. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, which investigates and prosecutes corruption in Nigeria, said in a report this week that some of the recovered money was reinvested in government projects. African Rivers recently embarked on an exercise to check water dams in a number of African countries to ascertain how secure they are and what they are being used for. Police in Kenya used tear gas to disperse protesters who attempted to occupy a church that recently received a significant donation from President William Ruto. The Jesus Winner Ministry in the Roysambu suburb of Nairobi was given 155 thousand US dollars, a gift that sparked criticism from some young Kenyans grappling with the high cost of living. Ruto has defended his donation and has also pledged a similar contribution to another church in Eldoret. IMF urges Nigeria to re-channel savings from ending fuel subsidies into government coffers
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) says Nigeria's debt level is moderate, not high risk, and not capable of pushing the country into a debt trap. The Washington-based lender has pointed out that the savings from ending fuel subsidies should be re-channelled into the government's coffers so that it can be used for important development spending. The fund further advised the West African country to keep monetary policy tight, saying it is necessary to help bring down inflation and stabilise the naira exchange rate. New formal agreements signed between De Beers and Botswana's government
Anglo American has announced that De Beers Group and the government of Botswana have signed the formal new agreements for a 10-year Sales Agreement which may be extended by a further 5 years and a 25-year extension of the Mining Licences from 2029 through to 2054 for Debswana. Debswana operates the Jwaneng and Orapa diamond mines in Botswana and is a 50:50 joint venture between De Beers and the Botswana government. An investigation by South Africa's non-profit organisation, Open Secrets has found that Telecomms Company, MTN has played a role in shutting down the internet during elections and wars in Sudan, Cameroon, Iran, Afghanistan and Uganda- enabling governments to silence the opposition. The investigation found that MTN and its subsidiaries have been implicated in human rights violations across Africa and the Middle East. According to the Open Secrets report, Internet Shutdowns have cost the world economy about $9.13 billion in 2023 alone. Mozambique's government has approved a value-added tax exemption on items such as sugar, edible oils and soaps until the end of the year. President Daniel Chapo says these measures are the government's way to improve the living conditions of ordinary citizens and boost the economy. The government says the decision to exempt VAT on some products will allow entrepreneurs, factories and other production units of these products to introduce or reintroduce these products with some ease for the benefit of the population. Cobalt is a critical raw material used in various industries, particularly in the production of rechargeable batteries for electric vehicles, smartphones, and other electronic devices.
